About the role

As a Technical Officer (TGO3), you will bring advanced technical knowledge and experience to the delivery of high-quality diagnostic laboratory services. At this level, you will determine and develop standardised methodologies, ensuring adherence to proven techniques in the provision of technical services. Your expertise will support accurate, reliable and timely results that are critical to patient care and clinical decision-making.

Working closely with the Head of Unit, you will assist in supervising and co-ordinating the day-to-day activities of staff and workflow within a major diagnostic laboratory service. You may exercise significant technical responsibility independently, act as a specialist within a multidisciplinary team, or contribute as a senior member of a project team. This is an opportunity to play a key leadership role, strengthen service delivery and contribute meaningfully to the ongoing excellence of laboratory operations.

About You

To excel in this role, you will bring extensive technical expertise in Medical Microbiology, strong leadership capability and a proven commitment to quality, safety and client-focused service delivery. You will meet the following essential minimum requirements:

  • Qualifications and Specialist Expertise: Diploma or Advanced Diploma in an approved and recognised qualification (or equivalent), with extensive knowledge across most areas of diagnostic microbiology and high-level specialist expertise within the relevant discipline.

  • Technical Leadership and Laboratory Management: Extensive and recent experience in the daily and longer-term operations of a Microbiology laboratory across multiple technical domains, including QC procedures, ISO and NATA documentation requirements, validation of interpretative findings and supervision and training of laboratory staff.

  • Operational Excellence and Problem-Solving: Demonstrated ability to accept responsibility for work outcomes, prioritise tasks and meet deadlines in accordance with standard laboratory procedures, review and improve methods, troubleshoot complex issues and competently evaluate and report on laboratory instruments and methodologies.

  • Communication, Teamwork and Governance: Proven ability to lead, motivate and develop teams, communicate effectively with staff and clients at all levels, provide high-quality client-focused service, and apply knowledge of relevant legislation, privacy and confidentiality requirements, equal employment opportunity principles and Work Health and Safety practices.
