About the Role:

A compelling opportunity is now available within the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network (NALHN) for an experienced and dedicated Consultant Psychiatrist to join the South Australian Intellectual Disability Health Service (SAIDHS).

SAIDHS is a state-wide, specialist health service delivering comprehensive medical and mental health care for adults with diagnosed intellectual disability and complex needs.

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high‑quality clinical care in partnership with SAIDHS’ multidisciplinary team of health professionals. You will provide specialist psychiatric expertise, contribute to collaborative treatment planning, and support the delivery of integrated, person‑centred services. Your responsibilities will include direct clinical care, active participation in multidisciplinary case discussions, and involvement in research and service development initiatives that enhance outcomes for consumers and their families.

To be eligible for this position, you must hold a Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent, Appropriate Specialist Qualifications and registrable with the Medical Board of Australia as a Medical Practitioner with specialist registration; or another qualification as defined in the SA Medical Officers Award.

The Total Indicative Remuneration figure is calculated taking into account base salary, leave loading and superannuation as well as managerial allowances, professional development or any other allowances where appropriate.

In this role, you will bring a high standard of clinical practice, professional integrity, and a strong commitment to delivering compassionate, evidence‑based care. Your background demonstrates:

  • extensive experience working with consumers with mental health conditions, including those with intellectual disability and complex presentations
  • the ability to engage empathetically with consumers, families and carers, and collaborate effectively with external agencies
  • strong communication skills, both written and verbal, enabling clear, respectful and timely interactions with colleagues at all levels
  • proven capability to work within a multidisciplinary environment and contribute to a positive team culture
  • effective workload prioritisation, adaptability to evolving service needs, and a commitment to continuous quality improvement
  • competence in basic computing, including email, electronic medical records and word processing
