About the role

The Associate Midwifery Unit Manager leads and delivers high‑quality, patient‑centred shared maternity care, supporting affiliates and coordinating care needs. The AMUM provides advanced clinical practice, guides staff, maintains strong stakeholder relationships, and drives continuous service improvement.

Key duties of the role

  • Support Shared Maternity Care program, working closely with Shared Maternity Care Affiliates (SMCA) and General Practitioners (GPs) to ensure smooth program management.
  • Works within a Shared Maternity Care model of partnership and support for women's right to self- determination.
  • Ensure timely and effective communication with SMCA regarding patient results, suitability for Shared Care, and any updates on care needs.
  • Maintain positive relationships with stakeholders, ensure ongoing service evaluation and improvement, and encourage active stakeholder involvement.
  • The assessment, planning, implementation and co-ordination of care and appropriate service delivery options.
  • Provide health education, counselling and rehabilitation programs to improve health outcomes.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in consumer care.

Skills and Experience

  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Nurse and Midwife or Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and who holds or who is eligible to hold a current practising certificate.
  • Registered Nurse/Midwife or Midwife with at least 3 years post registration experience.
  • Experience in problem solving, negotiation and conflict management.
  • Knowledge of the Shared Maternity Care Program.
  • Effective communication, problem solving, conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and meet set timelines, whilst working under minimal supervision
  • Ability to relate to people from a diverse range of cultural and social backgrounds.
