Transform Lives as a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner - SALHN

The Booked Assessment Clinic (BAC) is a one-off opinion and report service providing specialist mental health assessment for individuals aged 16–64 years residing within the SALHN catchment area who present with a defined or suspected mental health disorder.

The purpose of the Nurse Practitioner role within BAC is to deliver timely, autonomous, evidence-based, one-off non-urgent assessments for individuals referred for specialist mental health review. This is an advanced practice role focused on diagnostic clarification, comprehensive formulation, and clear clinical recommendations to inform ongoing care planning.

The service is designed to provide structured, high-quality assessment rather than longitudinal treatment or crisis intervention. Referrals are limited to individuals with stable presentations who do not require emergency, acute, or involuntary mental health assessment at the time of referral.

About the role: 

Reporting to the Nursing Director, duties for the role will include:

  • Provide timely, autonomous, evidence-based, one-off non-urgent psychiatric assessments for individuals aged 16–64 years referred to the BAC.
  • Formulate clinical presentations using recognised diagnostic frameworks
  • Develop comprehensive biopsychosocial formulations
  • Provide evidence-based pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment recommendations.

About you:

  • Registered as a Nurse by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and who holds a current practicing certificate. Must be enrolled in an approved mental health course or hold a qualification in mental health practice,
  • Demonstrated ability to work as an autonomous practitioner and/or as part of a multidisciplinary team,
  • Effective leadership skills including highly developed skills in communication, problem solving, conflict resolution and negotiation,
  • Demonstrated ability in the facilitation of change management,
  • Registered Nurse and or Midwife with at least 3 years post registration experience,
  • Demonstrated advanced level of nursing and or midwifery practice in the care and management of Mental Health consumers, Experience in the supervision of students, enrolled nurses and less experienced registered nurses and or midwives
