  • Total Indicative Remuneration Package: $113,969 - $177,769 MDP2 (pro rata) 
  • As per the SMOEA 2025, the total term of employment with SA Health will be 3 years.
  • Rotations following the initial 12 month allocation as Fellow will be determined in line with training and SA Health’s requirements. This may include transfer to other SA Health locations to perform work appropriate to classification, skills and capabilities.

You'll gain hands-on experience in complex cardiac procedures, advanced thoracic surgery, and emergency interventions while contributing to life-saving patient care. This prestigious fellowship runs through to June 2029 and offers comprehensive professional development in one of South Australia's premier tertiary teaching hospitals.

About the role: 

Reporting to the Head of Unit, this role is responsible for the provision of high quality care to patients in the wards, and other areas such as theatres, investigational and procedural area, emergency department and outpatients. The position of Cardiothoracic Fellow involves teaching junior medical officers and medical students. 

Duties for the role will include:

  • Overall care and supervision of the delivery of that care to patients under the care of the Department or referred to the Department (in particular timely review and management of patients referred by the Emergency Department),
  • General administration of the ward procedures relating to medical care (in particular the relevant clinical protocols), ensuring adequate documentation in the case notes, discharge summaries and follow up appointments,
  • In association with the Unit Registrars, supervise resident staff and students on a day-to-day basis ensuring ready availability to provide advice and guidance. In doing this, the fellow will oversee that registrars, residents and interns are clearly aware of their tasks,
  • To receive sound understanding of the principles and practice of the full range of cardio-thoracic procedures including revision procedures for failed or complicated previous surgery. Have a full understanding of the requirements for initial assessment, preparation for surgery, post-operative and long-term management,
  • The Surgical Division is committed to the concept of clinical practice improvement. The Fellow is expected to gain an understanding of CPI principles during their term at FMC. It is expected they will participate in CPI projects where required

About you:

  • Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent,
  • Registrable with the Medical Board of Australia as a Medical Practitioner
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) or equivalent overseas qualification in Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • Significant experience in cardiac or cardiothoracic surgery
  • Appropriate references from cardiothoracic surgeons at previous institutions
  •  Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people including colleagues and other professional staff possessing excellent interpersonal skills,
  • A commitment to providing quality service to patients and their families,
  • Ability to work as a member of a team whilst supervising the more junior medical staff,
  • Appropriate time management skills,
  • High level skills in problem solving and decision making,
  • Good teaching skills and the ability to teach medical education at all levels,
  • Broad clinical experience and competence in the practice of surgery,
  • Experience in clinical education and accreditation activities,
  • Competence in surgical procedures appropriate to the Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit
