About the role

Nurse Practitioner Candidate:

The Nurse Practitioner Candidate provides leadership and coordination of forensic mental health care within the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, delivering expert clinical services to young people with complex behavioural and emotional needs. The Nurse Practitioner Candidate works across Youth Court and Justice settings, developing advanced practice skills toward Nurse Practitioner qualification.

Nurse Practitioner:

The Nurse Practitioner works autonomously and collaboratively, providing expert, evidence-based mental health care for children, youth, and families. The Nurse Practitioner is accountable for clinical decisions and culturally respectful practice within an approved and expanded scope of nursing.

Key duties of the role

Nurse Practitioner Candidate

  • Provide a comprehensive therapeutic assessment, generating a collaborative future treatment plan for clients.
  • Contribute expert mental health nursing assessment and advice to local clinical teams to achieve integrated mental health nursing care.
  • Implement different therapeutic interventions and provide individual case management.
  • Contribute specific expertise to mental health nursing practice through clinical protocol and standards development.
  • Apply evidenced based recommendations to improve practice and service function.

Nurse Practitioner

  • Integrate contemporary information and evidence with personal experience to support decision making, innovative thinking, and objective analysis.
  • Provide comprehensive assessment of health status including history and physical examination.
  • Initiate and interpret diagnostic pathology and/or radiology.
  • Initiate interventional therapies, medications and use of health appliances or equipment and admit and discharge from services.
  • Lead and coordinate the development and evaluation of clinical protocols, standards, policies and procedures.

Skills and Experience

Nurse Practitioner Candidate:

  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and who holds, or who is eligible to hold, a current practicing certificate, enrolled in an approved Mental Health course or holds a qualification in mental health practice.
  • Registered Nurse and or Midwife with at least 3 years post registration experience.
  • Competence in delivering proficient and comprehensive mental health nursing assessment.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and meet set timelines.

Nurse Practitioner:

  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and who holds, or who is eligible to hold, a current practicing certificate with the notation of Nurse Practitioner.
  • Registered Nurse/Midwife with at least 3 years post registration experience.
  • Demonstrated advanced level of nursing practice in the care and management of mental health nursing.
  • Experience in developing policies, procedures and models of care in the relevant area of clinical practice.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Nurse Practitioner’s role.
