As per the SMOEA 2025, the total term of employment with SA Health will be 3 years. Rotations following the initial 6-12 month Paediatric Anaesthesia Senior Registrar allocation will be determined in line with your training and SA Health's requirements. This may include transfer to other SA Health locations to perform work appropriate to classification, skills and capabilities.

About the role

The Anaesthesia Senior Registrar delivers anaesthesia and acute pain management to both public and private paediatric surgical and medical patients under the care of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The Senior Registrar will work as part of the Children’s Anaesthesia Department, contributing to the delivery of optimal and safe paediatric anaesthesia care under consultant supervision (and occasionally may provide a paediatric anaesthesia service to the Royal Adelaide Hospital).

Key duties of the role

  • By the end of attachment, demonstrate the ability to anaesthetise children safely & effectively over the age of 3 for common paediatric procedures.
  • On occasion, provide anaesthesia assistance for out of hours obstetric or gynaecologic emergencies.
  • Deliver world class standards of acute pain management through anaesthetic practice, acute pain rounds, consultation and staff.
  • Follow up will be provided for patients with abnormal test results, under appropriate supervision.
  • Ensure patients and their families are able to exercise their rights and responsibilities.

Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) or equivalent,
  • Registrable with general medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Medical Practitioner.
  • Significant experience in anaesthesia, including enrolment in and progression through the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), or equivalent, training program.
  • Demonstrated completion of ANZCA Advanced Training requirements in anaesthesia, including all relevant specialised study units, or equivalent.
  • Highly developed clinical knowledge, judgement and procedural skills.
  • Ability to engage professionally with patients, families, colleagues and stakeholders on sensitive and complex matters.
