As per the SMOEA 2025, the total term of employment with SA Health will be 3 years.  Rotations following the initial 12 month Paediatric General Surgery Registrar allocation will be determined in line with your training and SA Health's requirements.  This may include transfer to other SA Health locations to perform work appropriate to classification, skills and capabilities.

About the role

The Paediatric General Surgery Registrar contributes to the delivery of high-quality surgical services to inpatient and outpatient paediatric patients across WCHN. The role provides broad exposure to emergency, elective and ambulatory paediatric surgery, including participation in after-hours and remote on-call services. Working under Consultant supervision, the Registrar develops advanced clinical skills while contributing to teaching, research, quality improvement and multidisciplinary patient care. Opportunities may also exist to provide paediatric surgical services at Flinders Medical Centre.

Key duties of the role

  • Provide safe and effective surgical care for paediatric inpatients and outpatients, including pre-operative assessment and post-operative management.
  • Participate in emergency after-hours and remote on-call rosters to support paediatric surgical services.
  • Maintain high-quality clinical records, documentation and patient management plans.
  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervision of junior medical staff and departmental education activities.
  • Participate in research, clinical audit and quality improvement initiatives to support best practice patient care.

Skills and Experience

  • Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) with General Registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Broad knowledge of surgical practice and a commitment to developing paediatric surgical expertise.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with patients, families and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and contribute positively within a team environment.
  • Commitment to quality improvement, clinical governance, education and patient-centred care.
