Come and join the team in SA Health’s Legal and Legislative Policy Unit as a high impact Legal Officer, where your expertise will support decisions that help shape South Australia’s health system.

Working as a trusted adviser in a small, highly skilled team, you will operate in a diverse and intellectually stimulating environment to provide legal and legislative policy advice and contribute to governance and policy matters to support the delivery of legal, insurance and governance advisory services across SA Health.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Provide timely written and verbal legal advice on complex and sensitive matters to key decision-makers, including the Minister for Health and Wellbeing, the Chief Executive, and Senior Executives.
  • Assist the Director and Senior Legal Officers of the Legal and Legislative Policy Unit to identify unresolved or emerging legal and legislative policy issues.
  • Identify legal risks and recommend practical actions to manage exposure.
  • Prepare high quality briefings, correspondence and legal documentation.
  • Manage competing priorities with professionalism and agility, delivering high-quality outcomes in a dynamic environment, while maintaining strong record management practices and contributing to a collaborative, high-performing team culture.
  • Liaise with the Crown Solicitor’s Office and coordinate legal instructions.

To be successful:

  • You’ll have a Degree in Law, be an admitted legal practitioner and have a current practising certificate from the Law Society of South Australia. This is an essential minimum requirement.
  • You bring significant experience as a legal officer, with a track record of consistently providing clear, timely advice in complex and sensitive matters. You have proven capacity to manage competing priorities, deliver outcomes in a fast-paced environment, and help build capability across a legal team.
  • You have strong expertise in identifying, assessing and resolving complex legal, governance and policy issues, applying sound judgement and legislative interpretation. You can work autonomously, make sound decisions under pressure, and communicate confidently with senior leaders and diverse stakeholders.
  • You are calm, professional and collaborative, with strong judgement and discretion. You build trusted relationships, support safe and inclusive workplaces, and model respectful practice when working with practitioners and executives.

About Us:

The Department for Health and Wellbeing assists the Minister for Health and Wellbeing to set the policy framework and strategic directions for SA Health. The Department supports the delivery of public health services, formulates health policy, facilitates public and consumer consultation on health issues, and monitors the performance of South Australia’s health system by providing timely advice, research and administrative support.

The Legal and Legislative Policy Unit sits within the Governance Advisory Services branch of SA Health’s Strategy and Governance Division. The Legal and Legislative Policy Unit facilitates the provision of Legal, Governance, and Insurance advice to the Minister for Health and Wellbeing; the Chief Executive of the Department for Health and Wellbeing; the Executive Director, Governance Advisory Services; and all SA Health Staff.
