Overview:

  • The Principal Media Adviser is a key leader of the SA Health Media Unit, responsible for protecting and promoting the reputation and services of SA Health. Your work will result in collectively contributing to improving confidence in the public health system and the public taking an active role in their health and wellbeing.
  • The SA Health Media Unit coordinates all media responses, interviews and press conferences for the statewide public health system including the Department for Health and Wellbeing, local health networks, the Rural Support Service and shared services including Breast Screen SA, SA Dental, SA Medical Imaging and SA Pathology.
  • Working in a fast-paced environment as part of a supportive team, our Principal Media Adviser is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive strategic media and communication services for the Department for Health and Wellbeing and the wider public health system. 
  • This involves leading the research, development and implementation of media strategies, responses and crisis communications, working collaboratively with the Media Manager and senior SA Health leaders on a broad range of plans, programs, campaigns and services.
  • The role also coordinates the effective day-to-day operational management and leadership of a small team of Media Advisers.

Criminal History Screening Requirement

  • A ‘National Police Certificate’ NPC (also known as a ‘Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check’ NCCHC) for employment involving no contact with vulnerable groups is required for this position (general employment).
  • A DHS ‘Working With Children Check’ (WWCC) is required for this position.

Immunisation Risk for this position is Category C (minimal patient contact).

SA Health Services are required to implement the Addressing vaccine preventable disease: Occupational assessment, screening and vaccination policy in the workplace.

Special Conditions

  • Tertiary qualification in communications, public relations, media, arts, government or similar field from an Australian Institution, or comparable overseas qualification/experience.
  • Proven ability to write to a range of audiences with an emphasis on detail, accuracy and plain English, and to apply highly developed liaison, negotiation and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively under pressure, meet deadlines and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability and judgement in providing strategic solutions to complex media issues.
  • High level of demonstrated experience in media and communications, and proven experience in journalism, public relations or media liaison.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of contemporary internal and external media and communication approaches, stakeholder relations and the principles of effective communication.
