As per the SMOEA 2025, the total term of employment with SA Health will be 3 years. Rotations following the initial 12-months allocation to Transitional Fellow PICU will be determined in line with your training and SA Health’s requirements. This may include transfer to other SA Health locations to perform work appropriate to classification, skills, and capabilities.

About the role

The Paediatric Intensive Care Transitional Fellow (TF) position offers a broad experience in Paediatric critical care. Under Consultant supervision, you will work integrally with an experienced team to provide high quality care to critically ill and injured children. The transition from registrar responsibilities to consultant level responsibilities will be an evolving continuum through the year. The TF will be supported by fellow consultants to take part in all aspects of consultant responsibilities.

Key duties of the role

  • Participate in all duties associated with inpatients, including assessment of new admissions, care coordination, management of the day-to-day progress of assigned patients in the ward, discharge planning, and follow up arrangements.
  • Provide supervision and training of more junior Trainee Medical Officers.
  • Perform emergency and routine patient care procedures under supervision.
  • To support the Paediatric Trauma Service and MEDSTAR Kids, provide advice to clinicians in regional and remote centres, in conjunction with the PICU Consultant, and maintain hospital awareness of arriving children.

Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) or equivalent.
  • Registrable with the Medical Board of Australia as a Medical Practitioner.
  • CICM entry requirements for Transitional Fellow year.
  • Exposure to trauma intensive care, neuro-intensive care, and cardiothoracic surgery intensive care.
  • Successful Completion of Part 2 CICM examinations.
  • Successful completion of medical, intensive care and anaesthesia exposure time (CICM).
