The Surgical Resident Medical Officer plays a pivotal role in managing the day-to-day care of patients within the unit, overseeing ward duties, assisting in operating theatres, and guiding medical students and interns. Additionally, this role involves attending post-graduate meetings, contributing to research projects, presenting patient information to consultants and registrars, and occasionally participating in clinics under the supervision of a registrar. The Surgical Resident Medical Officer serves as a vital liaison, informing nursing and other appropriate staff about patient care within the unit.

About the role: 

Reporting to the Registrars, Fellows, Head of Unit and Chief Surgical Resident, some of your duties as Surgical RMO may involve:

  • Being rostered on-call anywhere between 3-5 on calls per month. 
  • Participating in multidisciplinary patient management and discharge planning. 
  • Referring all decisions concerning patients with your immediate supervisor. 
  • Assisting in the assessment and management of surgical patients admitted via the Emergency Department. 

About you:

  • Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent.
  • Registrable with the Medical Board of Australia as a Medical Practitioner. 
  • Completed internship training or relevant medical training to commence as a Surgical RMO.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people including colleagues and other professional staff.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and provide direction, show leadership to junior medical staff and have affective interpersonal skills and teaching skills.
  • Appropriate time management skills/punctuality.
  • Adequate level of skills in problem solving, decision making and assessment of patients.
  • Completion of AMC Clinical Examination preferred
