About the role: 

Reporting to the Head of Unit, this role is responsible for providing clinical services of the highest possible standard to Mental Health Service Division patients, both in terms of individual performance and by providing clinical leadership and contribution to a multidisciplinary approach to the delivery of patient care. This role is based in the Older Persons Mental Health inpatient unit at Flinders Medical Centre, with opportunities to provide support to other parts of the service. The Consultant Psychiatrist is actively involved in teaching medical students and trainee medical officers and where appropriate modelling clinical decision making to other members of the multidisciplinary team. They participate in clinical audit and quality, continuous improvement, safety and clinical risk management activities and continuous medical education activities.

  • Provide specialist level psychiatric care and coordinate comprehensive follow-up treatment plans
  • Deliver high quality and safe patient care consistent with SALHN Integrated Governance Framework
  • Provide clinical supervision to Senior Medical Practitioners, Trainee Medical Officers and Medical Students
  • Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary clinical teams to ensure integrated patient care
  • Contribute to after-hours on-call services according to departmental roster arrangements

About you:

  • Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent. Appropriate Specialist Qualifications and registrable with the Medical Board of Australia as a Medical Practitioner with Specialist registration (Psychiatry); or another qualification as defined in the SA Medical Officers Award.
  • RANZCP Advanced Certificate in Old Age Psychiatry (or equivalent) desirable but not essential.
  • Demonstrated high standard of clinical practice in Psychiatry.
  • Experience with the supervision and teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff.
  • Extensive clinical experience relevant to work in Psychiatry.
  • Experience in a broad range of medical fields relevant to the practice of emergency medicine.
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists or eligibility for this in foreseeable future as a Senior Medical Practitioner in Psychiatry.
