About the Role:

The Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer (AHLO) plays a vital role in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients throughout their hospital journey at Murray Bridge, ensuring care is culturally safe, respectful, and well-coordinated. Working alongside clinical teams, the AHLO provides cultural support, assists patients in understanding their care, helps bridge communication gaps (including arranging interpreters when needed), and ensures health information is clearly and sensitively explained. They also support smooth transitions from admission to discharge by coordinating transport, linking patients with community health services, and advocating for culturally appropriate care. This role is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference by strengthening connections between patients, families, communities, and healthcare services.

This position will be working across a 7-day roster, to be negotiated, in the Emergency Department and also supporting the inpatient ward patients as required in collaboration with the AHLO team.

What We're Looking For:

Essential Criteria 

  • Strong ability to communicate and work respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal individuals, families, communities, and multidisciplinary health teams
  • Demonstrated experience supporting Aboriginal people in health or community settings and building trusted relationships and networks
  • Sound understanding of Aboriginal health issues and the social determinants of health
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, meet deadlines, and handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately
  • Competent in basic computing and office systems (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, email, databases) and awareness of workplace safety and quality standards

Desired Criteria 

  • Relevant qualification in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care or Community Care, with understanding of culturally safe, person-centred support
  • Experience supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to access health and community services, including knowledge of grief, loss, and culturally appropriate communication
  • Knowledge of local health systems and services (including SA Health and RMCLHN), community networks, and the social determinants impacting Aboriginal health outcomes
