About the role

The Nurse/Midwife Consultant for Perinatal Practice Guidelines (PPGs) provides expert clinical nursing and midwifery advice to support the development, review, and implementation of statewide perinatal guidelines across South Australia. The role coordinates and supports a multidisciplinary working group, ensuring guidelines are developed, reviewed, and endorsed in line with SA Health governance requirements. This position requires advanced clinical expertise, leadership, independent decision-making, and accountability for professional advice and improving patient outcomes.

Key duties of the role

  • Contribute expert nursing/midwifery assessment and advice to local clinical teams to achieve integrated nursing/midwifery care within a risk management framework.
  • Implement and co-ordinate within span of control, processes for quality improvement and continuity within corporate risk management and nursing/midwifery professional practice frameworks.
  • Hold a contemporary professional practice portfolio containing evidence of postgraduate qualifications, learning and practice experience that underpin a demonstrable application of knowledge and skills commensurate with the level and type of practice expected of the role.
  • Contribute specific expertise to monitor and evaluate research activities in order to improve nursing or midwifery practice and service delivery.
  • Provides leadership and direction, acts a role model, mentor, consultant and resource person.

Skills and Experience

  • Midwife or Registered Nurse/Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and current practising certificate
  • Minimum 3 years post-registration experience in midwifery or relevant clinical practice area
  • Demonstrated experience in clinical leadership, guideline development, and evidence-based practice
  • Strong communication, negotiation, teamwork, and change management skills within multidisciplinary environments
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse evidence, review literature, and apply findings to improve clinical practice
