Overview:

This position is responsible for the planning and delivery of health protection operations and expert professional consultancy and advice on issues related to health protection and public health law enforcement across South Australia, with a main focus on out of council areas.

The position oversees the delivery of a critical front line public and environmental health services to ensure compliance with the requirements of the South Australian Public Health Act 2011, Food Act 2001 Safe Drinking Water Act 2011 and other subordinate legislation on behalf of the Minister for Health and Wellbeing. 

The position is also responsible for undertaking complex strategic and logistical planning to ensure the effective prioritisation and targeting of activities and resources and safe service delivery. Establishing and maintaining partnerships with state and Commonwealth agencies, industry and non-government organisations, and Aboriginal stakeholders is an essential part of the role to protect and promote the health of South Australians, including strengthening Aboriginal environmental health outcomes.

The role will contribute to an inclusive, culturally responsive and equitable public health system for all South Australians.

Regional Public Health Unit

The Regional Public Health (RPH) Unit sits within the Aboriginal and Regional Public Health Team, Public Health Planning and Response, Department for Health and Wellbeing. RPH is responsible for provision of public and environmental health regulatory functions within the ‘Out-of-Council’ (OoC) areas of South Australia on behalf of the Minister, as well as the central lead for Aboriginal Environmental Health work, with a dedicated, coordinator position allocated for this purpose.

The Regional Public Health aims to provide up-to-date and evidence-based environmental health information, advice and services as required to organisations, businesses, and communities in Out-of-Council (OoC) areas across South Australia. The Unit has three primary outcomes:

  • Deliver regulated OoC activities and statutory services in a safe and lawful manner, in compliance with relevant legislation.
  • Enhance public and environmental health outcomes in OoC areas of SA
  • Strengthen Aboriginal environmental health outcomes in SA and nationally.

Criminal History Screening Requirement

  • A ‘National Police Certificate’ NPC (also known as a ‘Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check’ NCCHC) for employment involving no contact with vulnerable groups is required for this position (general employment)

Immunisation Risk for this position is Category B (indirect contact with blood or body substances)

SA Health Services are required to implement the Addressing vaccine preventable disease: Occupational assessment, screening and vaccination policy in the workplace.

 

Special Conditions

  • A recognised degree in Environmental or Public Health or a relevant field of science that could be accepted for appointment as an Authorised Officer under the South Australian Public Health Act 2011 is required.
  • A driver’s licence Class C (Car) is essential.
  • Occasional interstate and intrastate travel by road (including driving 4 wheel drive vehicles on unsealed roads) and air to remote rural and Aboriginal communities. 
  • Out of hours work and overnight absences may be required.
