Provide specialist clinical exercise physiology services, leadership and supervision across SALHN Mental Health Services including the implementation, delivery, monitoring and evaluation of exercise and health-promotion programs which seek to enhance the physical and mental wellbeing of consumers in an acute inpatient mental health setting.

About the role: 

Reporting to the Nurse Unit Manager Margaret Tobin Centre, this role is responsible for delivering clinical interventions which promote recovery through individual consultation and group exercise programs which aim to support consumers to adopt exercise-based methods to manage physical and mental health symptoms as well as promote the long-term maintenance of positive health behaviours.

Duties for the role will include:

  • Implement evidence-based intervention programs in line with statewide, national and international guidelines.
  • Consider social and cultural diversities in service planning and provision to ensure access to and utilisation of culturally specific services.
  • Integrate contemporary information and evidence with personal experience to support the decision making, innovative thinking and objective analysis that is expected at this level, e.g. expert clinical knowledge to provide management activities that contribute to improve and optimise clinical care.
  • Collaborate with the multi-disciplinary team in their area of expertise and in the management of complex cases.
  • Review, and make recommendations, develop and implement workflow processes and quality assurance processes to improve practice and maintain a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Develop systems for monitoring, reviewing and improving the standards of services to clients.
  • Provide professional supervision to other exercise physiologists and contribute to the development of training programs.
  • Contribute specific expertise to monitor and evaluate research activities in order to improve clinical practice and service delivery.

About you:

  • Appropriate Degree or equivalent qualification, usually in human movement, inclusive of the exercise physiology elective and eligible for accreditation from Exercise Sports Science Australia (ESSA).
  • Extensive experience in the provision of clinical exercise physiology services to clients within a broad range of illnesses and disabilities.
  • Demonstrated experience in clinical leadership within a discrete unit, including program evaluation and service development.
  • Demonstrated experience in the effective development, implementation and evaluation of quality improvement initiatives, and/or departmental policies and procedures relevant in a hospital/rehabilitation setting.
  • Experience in the training of undergraduate Exercise Physiology students and less experienced staff.
  • Successful participation in a multidisciplinary team environment whilst maintaining a clear professional role and identity.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing projects which improve service delivery and/or client outcomes.
