About the Role:
Mental health presentations in emergency departments demand clinical expertise, calm under pressure, and genuine commitment to person-centred care. At the Lyell McEwin Hospital, you'll bring all three — working within the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network's Mental Health Service to deliver specialist assessment, treatment, and advocacy for adults at a critical moment in their care journey.
Your Role in the ED
Based within the Lyell McEwin Hospital Emergency Department and connected to the NALHN MHS Adult Service, you will work a Thursday-to-Monday roster across 8-hour shifts — providing consistent, experienced mental health clinical presence across the extended week. Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting comprehensive mental health assessments and formulating evidence-based management plans for emergency presentations
- Prescribing and managing pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments within your endorsed scope of practice (or working towards endorsement as a Candidate)
- Collaborating with ED medical, nursing, and allied health teams to coordinate safe, timely care and appropriate disposition pathways
- Contributing to service improvement, clinical consultation, and the professional development of the broader mental health nursing team
What You Bring
- Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse with Nurse Practitioner endorsement, or eligibility and active candidacy status
- Substantial post-registration experience in acute mental health or emergency mental health settings
- Demonstrated ability to conduct independent clinical assessments and manage risk in high-acuity environments
- Sound understanding of the Mental Health Act 2009 (SA) and its application in acute care
- A collaborative approach that supports multidisciplinary team functioning within NALHN's integrated health network
- Commitment to trauma-informed, recovery-oriented practice aligned with SA Health's mental health framework
To be eligible for this position you must be
- Registered or eligible for registration as a Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and who holds, or who is eligible to hold, a current practicing certificate with the notation of Nurse Practitioner.
- Enrolled in an approved Mental Health course or holds a qualification in mental health practice.
