About the position
The Media and Communication unit sits within the Future Growth Division and is responsible for public affairs, media liaison, reputation building, issues management, social media and internal communications.
The primary purpose of the Senior Media and Communications Advisor is to play a key role within the media team, leading and implementing media and communications strategies that raise awareness across the state, nationally and internationally on research, industry engagement, teaching and other areas of innovation from La Trobe via coverage in earned media and reinforced in university-owned external and internal channels.
 
Skills and experience
To be considered for this position, you will have:
 
• A degree in media, public relations or communications – or equivalent experience. At least four years’ relevant experience as a journalist, media/public relations or communications practitioner; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
• Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, including a demonstrated ability to understand and synthesise complex ideas into clear, succinct copy.
• A proven ability to develop excellent working relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of an organisation.
• A high degree of initiative, tenacity and problem-solving skills, and an ability to manage several different projects concurrently, delivering outputs in a timely manner.
• Strong working relationships with journalists across media sectors.
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently, follow established procedures with limited supervision and contribute positively to an effective team.
• High level of proficiency in computer software packages including MS Word, CMS, media monitoring systems e.g Streem, spreadsheets and databases.
