About the position
Ngura Ninti (‘Knowing Home’) is a project led by Professor Katherine Ellinghaus (La Trobe), Professor Barry Judd (University of Melbourne) and Emeritus Professor Richard Broome (La Trobe).
Together with a large group of Indigenous and non-Indigenous regional editors from universities and organisations across the country, we are creating a four-volume collection of key documents under contract with Routledge, which will tell the story of Australian history from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective. The project involves consultation with Indigenous communities, archival research, and prioritises Indigenous well-being.
We are seeking four research fellows to join the larger project team and become part of one of the following four regional teams:
• West (broadly, Western Australia)
• Central (broadly, South Australia and the Northern Territory)
• South East (broadly, Tasmania, Victoria, and lower New South Wales)
• North East (broadly, Queensland and upper New South Wales)
This position is for the South East regional team, led by Associate Professors Andrew Peters (Swinburne University) and Rebe Taylor (University of Tasmania), focusing on the history of Victoria and lower New South Wales from Aboriginal perspectives.
First Nations applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for this position. We recognise the unique knowledge, perspectives, and expertise that First Nations peoples bring to research, particularly in the context of decolonised practices and Indigenous-led initiatives.
This role offers a valuable opportunity to contribute to a project that centres First Nations peoples voices and perspectives, and we are committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all applicants.
Skills and Experience
To be considered for this position, you will have;
• Have, or be working towards, an MA or PhD or equivalent qualifications.
• Have experience doing decolonised research in higher education or as part of an Indigenous organisation, in galleries, museums or archives, or experience engaging with Indigenous people from urban, regional and remote backgrounds.
• High level organisational skills: the ability to work autonomously with direction from theme leaders, set priorities, meet deadlines, initiate and follow-up actions, all with minimal supervision.
• A record of publications, conference papers and/or reports, or professional or technical contributions which provide evidence of strong research potential.
• Sound analytical skills with an ability to communicate complex information clearly both orally and in writing.
