About the position

Reporting to the Director, Business Development (Research), the Senior Manager, Business Development plays a key role in identifying, shaping and securing high‑value industry‑engaged opportunities aligned with the University’s research, innovation and engagement priorities. The role leads end‑to‑end business development activity, from early engagement and opportunity scoping through to commitment, building a strong pipeline of industry partnerships, research collaborations, and applied innovation initiatives.

Duties at this level:

  • Develop and manage a high‑quality business development pipeline for industry‑engaged research and innovation, including prioritisation, forecasting, regular review, and performance reporting.
  • Identify, cultivate and progress industry partnerships across La Trobe University’s industry engagement portfolio, aligning partner needs with appropriate platforms, programs and research capabilities.
  • Work collaboratively with researchers across the Schools to build industry relationships that increase industry research income and strengthen research impact across relevant industry engagement platforms.
  • Work closely with platform, program and precinct leads to shape and progress opportunities in line with agreed operating models, ensuring clear handover at point of commitment.

Skills and knowledge:

  • Experience working within innovation precincts, industry engagement platforms, digital innovation hubs, or applied research environments.
  • Postgraduate qualifications with extensive relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of knowledge, training, and experience, supporting senior‑level business development, revenue growth, and partnership outcomes.
  • Demonstrated understanding of digital innovation, applied research, and innovation ecosystems, with awareness of broader economic, policy, technological, and societal factors influencing industry engagement.
  • Proven ability to identify, develop, and execute a portfolio of business development opportunities that deliver revenue growth, research impact, and strategic outcomes.
  • Demonstrated success engaging with industry and government stakeholders to secure support and funding for research collaborations, innovation initiatives, or large‑scale projects.
