Energy Markets (EM) is the commercial heart of the SSE Group, securing value for SSE's asset portfolios in wholesale energy markets as we move towards our vision of being a leading energy company in a net zero world. EM plays a critical role as the asset optimiser, route to market and risk management function for all SSE's Business Units (Wind, Hydro, Low Carbon Thermal, Distributed Energy and Customer portfolios). EM enables SSE to focus its expertise and capabilities in energy markets (including Trading, Risk Management, Energy Economics and Advanced Analytics) in one centre of excellence and, with these enhanced capabilities, support value creation and decision-making across the SSE Group.

The role

As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you'll join a team of developers working in Agile practices to modernise SSE Energy Markets IT practices. You will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, security, and scalability of our EM IT estate in both cloud and traditional on prem deployments; focusing on application packaging, code deployment, automation, infrastructure as code, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines. Your expertise in cloud services (Azure), security, and automation will be instrumental in driving forward the digital transformation initiatives.

You will

  • Design and deliver scalable cloud solutions, including infrastructure as code (Terraform), application packaging and deployment, integrations, and App Services—ensuring cost efficiency and adherence to best practices.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using tools like Azure DevOps and GitHub Actions, collaborating closely with development teams to streamline release management and accelerate delivery.
  • Implement robust monitoring and alerting frameworks with tools such as Splunk, Azure Monitor, and ServiceNow integration, proactively identifying issues and supporting incident management.
  • Drive automation, security, and compliance, optimising infrastructure, reducing manual tasks, maintaining documentation, supporting ITIL processes, and participating in on-call rotations for critical system support.

You have

  • Extensive experience in cloud infrastructure and DevOps, with deep expertise in Terraform for infrastructure as code and strong proficiency in Azure resource management, including networking, storage, databases, and compute services.
  • Advanced CI/CD knowledge, with hands-on experience using tools like Azure DevOps and GitHub Actions, and a solid grasp of release management, Agile delivery, and automation best practices.
  • Strong programming skills in languages such as PowerShell, JavaScript, and C#.NET, with a keen focus on implementing secure, scalable, and maintainable solutions.
  • Technically curious and proactive, with a passion for continuous learning and improvement, and a strong understanding of Azure monitoring, alerting, and security frameworks.
