Commercial Strategy Associate
- Full-time, hybrid opportunity based out of our beautiful Southbank Brisbane office
- In-house Strategy team with strong career pathways
- The role is available due to an internal promotion
Hello. We’re Virgin Australia. We’re the airline that’s always done things a little different. Our way. The Virgin way. We’re on a mission to make flying better than ‘nice’. And to do that, it takes a team of talented people who are passionate about customer experience, doing the right thing always, with a focus on safety – in the air, on the ground and in our workplaces. A team who values real diversity and inclusion, in a big brand with big ambitions.
What you’ll be doing:
Our Commercial Acceleration Strategy team is a high-performing team with top talent, diverse backgrounds and broad Management Consulting experience. We are a high visibility team with frequent exposure to General Managers and the CCO. We are looking for a Commercial Strategy Associate to help us in identifying opportunities to drive incremental revenue increases across the commercial division of our business. This role is available due to an internal promotion.
You will support the development of the broader commercial strategy and transformation roadmap to achieve our aspirations. You will focus on selected deep dives into these revenue growth opportunities. Projects could include refining how we deliver our value proposition to our customers as well as optimising Revenue Management opportunities (e.g. inventory and price setting optimisation). All our strategic projects are in collaboration with the relevant commercial functions and other teams within the Virgin Australia Group. You will be required to undertake complex quantitative modelling and analysis to measure initiative effectiveness and then provide insights to drive optimisation. You will work closely with relevant teams to augment commercial analytics to drive commercial outcomes.
In addition, this role will play a critical part in supporting the preparation of outputs to facilitate stakeholder management and decision making.
Key responsibilities:
- Take commercially focused problem statements and break them down into a logical course of action. This will involve creating models in Excel or doing deep-dive analysis to create recommendations for the business
- Drive workstreams within special projects and selected deep dives for value acceleration capture
- Support the development of VA’s broader commercial strategy and transformation roadmap
- Proactively work with internal stakeholders across the commercial functions and across the VA Group
- Work closely with the Finance, Network, Customer channels and Revenue Management teams
- Actively support the preparation for ELT/Board updates
- Support Manager, Commercial Acceleration Strategy to identify and scope commercial opportunities and lead the sizing of commercial benefits and investments
- Support delivery and optimisation of initiatives as required, including tracking and measuring initiative effectiveness
- Create complex models in Excel (strong knowledge of creating quantitative models in Excel is required for this role)
Who we’re looking for:
This is an incredible opportunity for an Associate or Senior Associate who’s in a Consulting role and looking to move into an industry role. A Commercial Analyst would also enjoy this position. Someone highly analytical with strong problem solving and stakeholder management skills is highly desirable.
- Relevant Bachelor’s degree (or relevant post-grad degree would be desirable)
- Minimum 2-4+ years' experience in Strategy/Management Consulting, or as a Commercial Analyst. Experience within McKinsey, Bain, BCG, LEK and PJP (doing Commercial Growth Strategy projects) is highly desirable, but not essential
- Advanced Excel skills, with the ability to build complex models from scratch where necessary
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Excellent stakeholder management skills
- Experience in preparing CEO/Board level presentations is desirable
- Willingness to learn SQL to retrieve data from the database
- A genuine interest in aviation
We’re committed to looking after you, with some of the best benefits and conditions in the industry – including (but not limited to):
- Discounted flights for you and your loved ones (including $1000 worth of travel credits per year)
- A flexible, hybrid work style. Work from home or the office, adapt your location to suit your style and needs
- One of Brisbane’s most admired head office locations, with South Bank train station, a supermarket, pharmacy, and lunch options downstairs plus a 5-minute walk to the Busway, a rooftop restaurant and onsite gym (with a low membership fee) and South Bank Parklands just across the road
- Discounts on travel insurance, lounge membership, car hire, accommodation, and experiences worldwide
- Cheaper hospitality, retail, technology, beauty and wellness services
- Free counselling and access to a well-being app to support your physical, mental, social and financial health
- ‘Dress for Your Day’ – enjoy the freedom to wear whatever makes you feel great for the type of work you do and the day you have ahead of you.
