About the role
As a Senior Data Engineer in our Data & AI team, you’ll lead the technical design and development of our Azure-hosted data and analytics environment. You’ll architect scalable solutions, optimise data platforms, and mentor engineers while collaborating across teams to deliver high-impact data products.

What you’ll do
- Conducting technical assessments of the Azure-hosted data platform to identify architectural gaps, performance bottlenecks, and scalability constraints, then designing and implementing solutions that enhance reliability and efficiency across Databricks and the broader environment
- Acting as the primary technical liaison with Databricks and other key technology vendors, managing relationships to ensure optimal platform performance, staying informed on new capabilities, and translating vendor roadmaps into actionable opportunities for Alinta's data and analytics strategy
- Driving technical innovation by researching and implementing emerging data engineering practices, developing novel approaches to metadata-based ELT/ETL frameworks, and establishing new standards and processes that position Alinta's data platform at the forefront of Australia's energy transformation
- Monitoring and optimizing Azure and Databricks resource utilization to balance performance with cost efficiency, implementing best practices for cluster management, data storage tiering, and query optimization to ensure the platform operates within budget while meeting business SLA
- Establishing comprehensive data quality monitoring, alerting, and observability practices across the data platform, implementing automated testing frameworks and data validation pipelines to ensure trusted, production-grade data products for analytics and AI initiatives
- Creating and maintaining comprehensive technical architecture documentation, runbooks, and best practice guides, facilitating knowledge transfer across the engineering team to build organizational capability and reduce key-person dependencies
Your experience
- 10+ years of commercial experience in data engineering
- Proven expertise in Databricks, Python, Scala or Java, and big data frameworks
- Strong background in data modelling and legacy system reverse-engineering
- Experience with DevOps/SRE practices and agile delivery teams
- Skilled in coaching and mentoring engineers, with a focus on quality and scalability
