The Environment and Sustainability Policy and Planning Department sits within the Planning Directorate and takes a lead role in developing the strategic environmental and sustainability policies and programs to deliver this outcome. The Sustainability Planning branch is responsible for developing policies, plans and strategies and undertaking projects and initiatives to address key policy areas such as climate mitigation, energy and carbon management, sustainability and environmental management.
About the Opportunity
As our Principal Planner - Sustainability you will provide expert advice in environmental and sustainability policy and planning matters in accordance with legislative, policy and business requirements.
Our current focus is coordinating implementation of our Environment and Sustainability Strategy 2042 and helping City of Moreton Bay to respond to climate change by quantifying emissions produced, identifying and analysing opportunities and working across Council to reduce emissions in line with our corporate target of net zero by 2039.
You will lead the delivery of highly complex environmental and sustainability policy and planning projects and specialist project teams (including external consultants) to achieve strategic and business outcomes. You will build high level relationships across a range of diverse internal and external stakeholders and facilitate project-based community consultation including representing Council at a range of forums.
As a Principal you will be a mentor within the team and a key technical expert in relation to the development, integration and implementation of key strategies and policy relating to sustainability, climate change, carbon emissions reduction and other major planning initiatives.
About you
We are seeking an enthusiastic, passionate team player and technical expert with substantial experience in project management and across the key functions of environmental planning, sustainability, climate change and/or strategic planning.
You will have
- high level experience in providing advice and recommendations on strategy and policy related to sustainability, climate change, carbon emissions reduction and other significant planning matters
- high level experience in applying relevant federal, state and local government legislation and environmental and sustainability planning principles and practices
- excellent communication skills with an ability to communicate complex environmental planning concepts and matters in a simple and concise manner (both verbally and in written form) and negotiate practicable and sustainable outcomes
- well-practiced skills and techniques with respect to stakeholder consultation and engagement associated with the delivery of highly complex environmental and sustainability projects
- the ability to apply advanced project management skills to deliver high performance outcomes in time critical environments with competing stakeholders interests
- the ability to lead project teams in response to changes in direction in uncertain or emergent circumstances and in a rapidly changing policy environment
- knowledge and experience working within a government and political context, is highly desirable.
