The Environment and Sustainability Policy and Planning Department sits within the Planning Directorate, part of the City Futures Group, and takes a lead role in developing the strategic environment, natural hazards and sustainability policies, projects and plans to deliver healthy environments and sustainable outcomes. Its functions are implemented across three branches including Sustainability Planning, Natural Hazards Planning and Biodiversity Planning.
Are you ready to lead a passionate team tackling some of the biggest sustainability challenges of our time? The City of Moreton Bay is seeking a dynamic and experienced Coordinator Sustainability Planning to guide our journey toward a more sustainable future.
As a key member of our Environment and Sustainability Policy and Planning Department, you will lead a team of specialists in sustainability, climate change, energy, and carbon planning. You will be responsible for the delivery of impactful strategies, plans, programs and initiatives that support Council’s net zero target and elevate sustainability across our organisation and community.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of city-wide sustainability and climate change mitigation plans, programs and initiatives including driving the path to net zero for our operations.
- Manage a high-performing team of planners and scientists to deliver strategic and technical advice on sustainability and climate matters.
- Drive integration of sustainability principles across Council departments and operations.
- Build and nurture strong relationships with stakeholders, from internal delivery partners to community groups and government agencies.
- Champion Council’s sustainability core value through bold leadership, advocacy, and innovation.
- Represent Council at industry, community, and intergovernmental forums.
About you
You’re a values-driven leader with a sharp strategic mind and a passion for sustainability. Confident and collaborative, you bring people together to deliver impactful outcomes. You communicate with clarity, guide your team with purpose, and thrive in complex, fast-paced environments. With a strong grasp of sustainability and climate change responses, policy, and government contexts, you know how to turn big ideas into results that matter. You will also have:
- Proven leadership in sustainability, environmental planning, climate change, or strategic policy development.
- Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams in fast-paced, politically nuanced environments.
- Deep understanding of legislative frameworks and sustainability policy at all levels of government.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- A flair for navigating complex projects with competing priorities and rapidly shifting circumstances.
- Hold a degree qualification relevant to the role (e.g., Environmental Science, Urban Planning, Sustainability) and a Current “C” Class Driver’s Licence
