Are you a carbon accounting and management technical specialist or know the ins and outs of the energy and carbon markets or renewable energy? Join City of Moreton Bay as a Principal - Sustainability (Energy and Carbon) in the Sustainability Planning team and help monitor, plan and manage greenhouse gas emissions reduction to achieve our net zero by 2039 target.

The Environment and Sustainability Policy and Planning Department sits within the Planning Directorate and takes a lead role in developing key strategic environmental and sustainability policies. The Sustainability Planning branch is responsible for developing policies, plans and strategies and undertaking projects to address climate mitigation and our net zero pathway, energy and carbon management, ecologically sustainable development and corporate sustainability.

About our opportunity

As our Principal Planner - Sustainability with a focus on Energy and Carbon, you will be a part of the Sustainability Planning team and provide technical expertise and lead the delivery of highly complex energy management and carbon reduction, sustainability, and climate change mitigation programs, projects, and services.

You will work with the Sustainability Planning Coordinator to lead preparation of Council’s annual greenhouse gas inventory and reporting program. You will also provide expert advice and oversee projects and initiatives related to energy and carbon management matters in line with our Environment and Sustainability Strategy 2042 and Council plans.

You will build high level effective relationships to achieve engagement and buy-in across a range of diverse internal and external stakeholders and facilitate project-based consultation. You will stay up to date with sustainability, energy and climate matters and attend forums, seminars, and other events to ensure our approach is contemporary and aligned with national and international guidance and protocols.

About you

We are seeking a technically minded, enthusiastic, and innovative team player who enjoys analysis and delivering win-win solutions and effective outcomes. You will have substantial experience in energy management, carbon accounting and emissions reduction and project management as well as any of the other key functions such as environmental planning, sustainability, climate change and strategic planning.

You will also have:

  • High level experience in applying relevant federal, state, and local government legislation and protocols and environmental and sustainability planning principles and practices
  • Substantial experience in project management and associated risk assessment and management practices
  • Knowledge and experience working within a government and political context, or ability to work effectively within this context
  • Ability to lead the technical work for a team of professionals and project teams and respond to changes in direction in uncertain or emergent circumstances and in a rapidly changing policy environment.
  • Experience in stakeholder consultation and engagement associated with the delivery of highly complex environmental and sustainability projects
  • Excellent communication skills with an ability to communicate complex energy management, carbon accounting and emissions reduction concepts and matters in a simple and concise manner
