Established in 1911, the University of Western Australia (UWA) is a member of Australia’s prestigious Group of Eight, and one of the country’s most innovative and ambitious institutions of higher education. Ranked in the Top 100 universities globally, it is committed to creating knowledge and transforming lives by way of leading-edge teaching, learning, and research activities, spanning a broad range of disciplines.
The University is currently inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates for the position of Chair in Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Medicine, offered in close association with Arthritis and Osteoporosis Western Australia. This pivotal role presents a unique opportunity for a senior academic clinician to lead an internationally recognised program of clinical care, education, and research aimed at improving outcomes for people living with a broad range of musculoskeletal conditions in Western Australia and beyond.
The Chair will provide senior clinical consultant leadership at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and play a central role in the academic mission of UWA’s Medical School. They will lead the design and delivery of innovative teaching at postgraduate level, supervise Honours, MD, and PhD students, and mentor junior clinical and academic colleagues. They will also contribute to the strategic development of medical curricula, ensuring that students receive an excellent and inclusive education in musculoskeletal health.
A key expectation is the development of a nationally and internationally recognised research program in Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Medicine. In doing so, the Chair will initiate and lead major research projects, attract significant competitive and philanthropic funding, and collaborate actively across disciplines to promote innovation and the translation of cutting-edge research into clinical practice. A demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary and community-engaged research will be highly valued.
Applicants must hold a medical degree and be registrable as a medical practitioner with both the Medical Board of Western Australia and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority. Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (or equivalent) is essential, as is a PhD or equivalent research profile. Candidates will have an outstanding track record in research, a strong publication history, and recognised leadership in clinical education and service. Experience working across hospital, academic, and community settings will be a distinct advantage.
The appointment will be offered as an initial five-year term, with the potential for extension. An attractive and negotiable remuneration package will be provided, including generous leave entitlements, salary packaging options, and relocation assistance where applicable. The University also offers flexible working arrangements, a strong commitment to work-life balance, and access to comprehensive occupational healthcare services.
