School of Earth Sciences

  • Full-time appointment on a fixed term basis for two years.
  • Base salary range: Level B, $118,150 – $139,812 p.a. plus 17% superannuation.

About the area

The School of Earth and Oceans at The University of Western Australia undertakes diverse fundamental and applied research with recognised strengths in mineral geoscience, petroleum geoscience, geochemistry, hydrogeology and marine geoscience. The School has an international reputation in research and teaching with strong support from the mineral exploration, petroleum and groundwater industries, and well-established collaborations with industry and state and federal government agencies.  The School hosts the ARC-funded Centre for Critical Resources for the Future, which brings together partners in academia, industry and government to address research and training challenges in critical minerals.

About the opportunity

  • Plan, implement and coordinate workflows according to project requirements and timelines, including undertaking measurements and data processing, ensuring data quality control, and assisting other researchers and students in these functions
  • Lead engagement with key industry partners, and be responsible for knowledge transfer to industry and government stakeholders
  • Oversee supervision and training of PhD students

About you

  • PhD qualification in Geoscience
  • Demonstrated expertise in mineralogy, mineral chemistry and geochronology, and in the application of these in critical minerals research
  • A high level of competency in techniques for rock and mineral characterisation and microanalysis, especially with electron microbeam, ion microprobe and laser ablation ICPMS platforms, with a track record of innovation in these or similar techniques
  • A record of establishing and maintaining effective, positive relationships with the minerals exploration industry
  • A demonstrated ability to work independently, show initiative, problem solve and work productively as part of a team

Note: A current “C” class driver’s licence will be required by the successful applicant.
