Senior Technician

  • Join a diverse and highly skilled technical team to support training and learning with a focus on Mechanical Engineering practical activities.
  • Provide hands on support with mechanical trade skills being highly sought after for maintenance and training on key teaching equipment such as engines, turbines, cooling systems and more.
  • Enjoy a part-time appointment on a fixed term basis for 12 months (0.6 FTE - 45 hours per fortnight).
  • Commencing Salary: $91,833 p.a. (pro-rata) plus 17% superannuation.

About the area

College Services provides technical support services to the University’s schools, including Heads of School, academic staff, and research students. The team is committed to providing effective and efficient services in support of the Schools’ and University’s strategic objectives, with a focus on continuous improvement and best practice.

Technical Services provides discipline specific, applied knowledge and skill sets to support UWA’s teaching and research goals in unison with our academic staff. This team of practitioners are focused on high performance outcomes, compliance and contributing to a pragmatic safety culture via the implementation of safe systems of work.

This team underpins training and learning across diverse disciplines in engineering including but not limited to Mechanical and Chemical Engineering and Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering. This team supports teaching and research in these and more diverse disciplines across multiple venues, including UWA’s Ezone Student Hub.

About the opportunity

  • Deliver hands on skilled mechanical technical support for engineering teaching with focus on Mechanical Engineering laboratories.
  • Provide practical training and technical expertise in specialist Thermodynamics equipment and procedures, ensuring safety and compliance in all operations.
  • Support the maintenance, servicing, and procurement of equipment and consumables for teaching and research, adhering to relevant policies and guidelines.

 About you

  • Ability to communicate with team technicians, academic staff, and students to assist with the planning, evaluation, and design of teaching practicals in engineering disciplines, focused on mechanical engineering.
  • Demonstrate, develop, and optimise techniques and supervise others in the operation of specialist equipment and instrumentation to support teaching and research.
  • Provide training and troubleshooting advice for staff and students with protocols, procedures, techniques, methodologies, and relevant analytical techniques.
  • Maintain a positive safety attitude and develop and implement localised safe systems of work for all staff and students through the provision of safety training and risk management.
  • Ensure the maintenance and servicing program for equipment, instrumentation and materials is completed in accordance with relevant policies, guidelines, and procedures.

Special Requirements

  • Able to fit the physical requirements of the position.
  • Current “C” class driver’s licence
  • Current (or ability to hold) high-risk licences for example Forklift and Dogging and Basic Rigging.
  • Preferred working days Monday, Tuesday, and Fridays during teaching weeks.
