Salary: (Casual HEO4) from $46.71 per hour plus an employer contribution of 11.5% superannuation applies.

The School of Animal & Veterinary Sciences runs a comprehensive dog and cat live animal desexing clinic for our 5th year veterinary science students and has been in place for the last 12 years. The program is run by a dedicated team of seven veterinarians and three nurses, including specialist surgeons and specialist anaesthetists. It aims to provide gold standard patient care in a purpose-built surgical skills suite to produce the best training for our veterinary science students.
The position is for a Certificate IV qualified Veterinary Nurse who has worked in small animal practice for a minimum of 3 years. The successful applicant will run all the nursing and day to day organisational aspects of our student desexing clinic. Ideally the applicant should also have a high level of nursing experience in the anaesthesia and surgical desexing and recovery of cats and dogs.
Some responsibilities of the role include: organisation, admission and discharge of animals for the desexing clinic, surgical theatre setup / clean up, maintaining consumable stock, recording details into the hospital’s practice management software, instrument cleaning and sterilisation, billing of clients. In addition to this you will assist students with animal handling, blood collection, patient care, assisting students with anaesthetic setup, anaesthetic induction, surgical patient preparation, sterile gowning and gloving, patient recovery and preparing patient discharge reports.
The start date will be Tuesday 4th March 2025. This casual position is expected to be on average 35 hours per week, Monday to Thursday for 25 weeks in the year, which are during the university teaching semesters. These run from early March to late October excluding university holidays, which generally coincide with SA school holidays. The hours of work range between 8am to 6pm, with the possibility of flexibility in the weekly rostered hours.
Selection criteria:
- Experience working in a small animal practice, for a minimum of 3 years
- Veterinary nursing experience in routine desexing of cats and dogs (desirable)
- Highly motivated, reliable, strong organisation skills and ability to work independently
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to support students in a professional caring environment
Qualifications:
- Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing
