The Culturally Nourishing Schooling (CNS) project is practice and research informed program aimed to better engage and support the education of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. The collaborative project between several Australian universities, local communities, and schools works to establish a culturally focused and strengths-based program that supports whole-of-school change and fosters long-term relationships between schools and their local communities. By engaging selected schools in a program of leadership and professional learning strategies backed by our research, CNS supports this change by helping educators rethink their approach to teaching and curriculum, and empowering schools to lead their own learning and community engagement practices. It encourages authentic collaboration between school leaders, teachers, and their Aboriginal staff – including Aboriginal Education Officers, Cultural Mentors, and community members – through pedagogical interventions such as Learning from Country.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow is required to support the development of a research agenda for the CNS project. The Fellow will work with the research team in developing a robust plan and supporting the timely development of research papers and reports. They will also be directly involved with developing and delivering of professional learning initiatives within participating schools. Preference will be given to candidates who have completed doctoral studies in an area commensurate with one or more key foci of this project, have demonstrated proficiency in qualitative and/or multivariate quantitative research methods and analysis, have experience in supporting the management of a large research program, and have demonstrated an ability to take the lead in writing research papers and reports. The candidate will also engage with the interstate postdoctoral research fellows for the purposes of collaborative research and strategic planning and support.

To be successful you will need:

  • A Ph.D. in a discipline area such as Indigenous Education, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Studies, or Culturally responsive education, within the past five years at the time of application, not including periods of career interruption.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander values, perspectives, connections and knowledges that will contribute to an academic environment from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander standpoints.
  • Experience with project management including ability to plan, organise, set priorities and meet deadlines, with flexibility to alter priorities to meet changing demands.
  • An emerging research track record with evidence of recent high quality scholarly publications.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively within a team. The ability to travel to regional and remote parts of South Australia and interstate will be required for this position.
