Environmental, Stakeholder & Community Manager

About Us

Join us at Cleanaway and contribute to making a sustainable future possible, together.

We transform waste into resources and renewable energy.  When you start to think of waste as a resource, it opens a world of possibilities.

As a high growth, ASX listed organisation with over 10,000 employees, our goal is to be recognised by our customers as the most innovative and sustainable waste management company with industry leading HSE performance.  We are Australia’s largest company in this sector, providing essential services to millions of customers and communities nationally.

The Opportunity

As the Environmental, Community & Stakeholder Manager, you will lead Cleanaway’s approach to environmental approvals, regulatory engagement and community relations across our national landfill portfolio.

This role is critical to ensuring regulatory compliance and licence integrity across all sites, building trusted and proactive relationships with regulators, government bodies, and local communities, and leveraging environmental approvals and licence conditions to unlock operational flexibility, airspace, and long-term value. It also ensures consistent systems, processes, and governance are embedded nationally.

You will operate as a trusted advisor to operational, engineering and leadership teams, helping translate regulatory requirements into practical, value-driven operational outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead national oversight of environmental approvals, licences, and regulatory compliance across landfill operations.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental licences, consent conditions, and regulatory obligations.
  • Proactively identify and manage regulatory risks, emerging issues, and regulatory change.
  • Act as the primary national interface with environmental regulators and government agencies.
  • Support regulatory reporting, audits, inspections, and incident notifications in partnership with site, engineering, and HSE teams.
  • Partner with operations and engineering to embed licence conditions into day-to-day site practices.
  • Lead community engagement strategies that support social licence to operate, particularly for sensitive or high-profile sites.
  • Oversee management of community enquiries, complaints, and escalations.
  • Identify regulatory and approval pathways that unlock operational or capital value.
  • Develop executive reports, regulatory submissions, and provide visibility on compliance and risk to leadership.

About You

  • Proven experience in environmental management, regulatory engagement, stakeholder relations or a related field (ideally within infrastructure, waste, resources or heavy industry).
  • Strong understanding of environmental approvals, licensing frameworks and regulatory processes across Australian jurisdictions.
  • Demonstrated experience working with regulators, government bodies and community stakeholders in complex operating environments.
  • Ability to translate regulatory requirements into practical, operationally workable solutions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing regulatory submissions and executive-level briefings.
  • Highly organised, proactive and comfortable operating across multiple sites, states and stakeholders.
  • Ability to influence without authority and build credibility across operational, technical and leadership teams.
