Job Summary: The Environmental Hazard Technician II performs inspections, testing, and environmental monitoring services in one of the following areas within the Department of Environmental Health and Safety: environmental hazards, hazardous waste, general safety, life safety, laboratory safety, or occupational safety.


Additional Department Summary: This position provides inspection services of safety equipment in University of Alabama facilities including, but not limited to, fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, exit lights, automated external defibrillators, emergency lights, and other safety and/or security items. These tasks and inspections are completed in accordance with IFC, NFPA and other fire and life safety standards or codes. In addition this position may provide assistance to other EHS functions on a regular basis and may be required to respond after hours. For this reason, this position must be available by UA EHS provided communication device 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Additional tasks performed by the Environmental Hazard Technician may involve regulatory compliance activities or require increased safety knowledge and applications (extinguisher recharging, social event inspections, response to emergencies, food service inspections, etc.).


Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of hazardous waste, general safety, life safety, environmental hazards, laboratory safety, or occupational safety experience.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.

Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.


Skills and Knowledge: Subject matter knowledge in a safety related field(s), including, but not limited to, life safety (general safety), fire safety, environmental safety and lab safety.


Preferred Qualifications: Experience inspecting safety equipment, maintaining fire extinguishers (recharging/maintenance),experience performing food service inspections, Fire Service experience, experience working with regulatory agencies, or successful completions of certification trainings pertinent to fire safety, life safety, environmental or lab safety (examples include but are not limited to, Portable Fire Extinguisher Training, Pre-Engineered Kitchen or Industrial Fire Extinguishing System Certifications, Fire Inspector Certifications, Fire Plan Examiner Training, Hazwoper Training, etc.).
