Job Summary: The Environmental Hazard Technician I assists with inspections, testing, and environmental monitoring services in one of the following areas within the Department of Environmental Health and Safety: environmental hazards, hazardous waste, general safety, life safety, laboratory safety, or occupational safety.


Additional Department Summary: The Environmental Hazard Technician I for Life Safety provides safety inspections for food safety, equipment safety, and general life safety, including, but not limited to, fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, exit lights, automated external defibrillators, emergency lights, other safety and/or security items in University of Alabama facilities. This includes fire extinguisher recharging, maintenance, installation of fire extinguisher cabinets, and/or AEDs. These tasks and inspections are completed in accordance with IFC, NFPA, and other fire and life safety standards or codes. In addition, this position may provide assistance to other EHS functions on a regular basis and may be required to respond after hours. For this reason, this position must be available by UA EHS provided communication device 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Additional tasks performed by the Environmental Hazard Technician may involve regulatory compliance activities or require increased safety knowledge and applications (for example social event inspections, response to emergencies, food service inspections, etc.).

A successful candidate for this role must have outstanding written and verbal communication skills. Candidates must communicate effectively with a all stakeholders including senior leadership, faculty members, and staff across campus. The candidate must have the ability to present complex issues in a clear and effective manner, verbally or in writing, to a variety of stakeholder groups both internally within EHS, on campus, and externally to federal or state agencies. Candidates must also have the ability to manage conflict with excellent negotiation skills, and a respectful demeanor.

Field work is an important component to this position and may include, but is not limited to, assessing, analyzing, and collecting data and other documentation for verification. Additionally, the position may include the development of recommendations and procedures related to program regulatory compliance. This field work may also include analysis as part of the assessment process. Additionally, candidates for this position may have experience inspecting safety equipment, maintaining fire extinguishers (recharging/maintenance), performing food service inspections, Fire Service experience, experience working with regulatory agencies, or successful completion of certification trainings pertinent to fire safety, life safety, environmental, or lab safety (examples include, but are not limited to, Portable Fire Extinguisher Training, Pre-Engineered Kitchen or Industrial Fire Extinguishing System Certifications, Fire Inspector Certifications, Fire Plan Examiner Training, Hazwoper Training, etc.).

Candidates must be self-motivated and able to work independently as well, since the employee conducts day-to-day assessments. Candidates must have the ability to work with limited supervision and to complete projects following tight deadlines. Fostering a strong teamwork ethic is essential as EHS continues to grow and develop the department.


Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and one (1) year of hazardous waste, general safety, life safety, environmental hazards, laboratory safety, or occupational safety experience.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable motor vehicle report at determined by the insurance carrier.

Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.

Candidate must have the ability to respond to campus in times of emergency response, work outside of standard business hours as required, and maintain communication accessibility 24 hours a day/7 days a week.


Skills and Knowledge: Subject matter knowledge in a safety related field, including, but not limited to, life safety (general safety), fire safety, environmental, or lab safety.
