Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:45pm; some early morning, nights and weekends.
Job Summary: The Building and Laboratory Safety Assistant supports the development and enhancement of a "culture of safety" within all areas of the college. Conducts safety walkthrough of research labs, teaching labs, student projects, offices, communal areas, multidisciplinary spaces, and related facilities. Ensures compliance with University of Alabama Environment Health and Safety (UA-EHS) safety policies and protocols. Reviews safety training compliance to authorize faculty, staff, and student access to college laboratories and working spaces for which a hazards mitigation strategy is needed. Coordinates lab decommissioning of outgoing or retiring faculty. Serves as the liaison between the college faculty/staff and EHS.
Additional Department Summary: Coordinates the logistics and operations for all buildings, including being the initial contact for incoming shipments and deliveries and providing general oversight of student workers in the receiving area to manage all shipping, receiving, storage, and inventory operations.
Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience; Or associate's degree or higher and some experience.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must be available to work a flexible schedule, which may periodically include early mornings, evenings/nights, and/or weekends. Must be able to obtain a forklift certification within six (6) months of hire.
Skills and Knowledge: Ability to remain knowledgeable of all safety and accreditation requirements for all the College's research, teaching, student project, and other related labs. Ability to create procedures that incorporate all requirements in coordination with EHS. Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Self-motivated. Working knowledge in the usage of personal computers and standard application software (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel). Understanding and appreciation for laboratory and workplace safety.
Preferred Qualifications: Laboratory safety experience in an academic setting. Experience driving a forklift.
