Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm; some evenings/weekend hours as needed


Job Summary: The RN I provides professional nursing care to patients. Reviews physicians' orders for accuracy and authorization prior to implementing them. Prescribes and initiates nursing treatment through direct, assisted, or delegation to other staff.


Additional Department Summary: Provides direct patient care to the highest degree of licensure. Participates in patient treatment and administers medications under the supervision of a physician or nurse practitioner and following documented treatment plans. Conducts intake screenings and evaluations. Administers and notes reactions to psychotropic drugs and other medications, and provides education to patients regarding medications. Applies appropriate crisis intervention techniques and assists in maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff and patients.

Responsible for maintaining accurate records and documentation of patient treatments in the electronic medical record (EMR). Completes all patient referrals, medical insurance precertification, and prior authorizations for diagnostic tests, prescriptions, medication refills, etc. Assists with all front office duties and covers reception desk as needed - patient check in/out, screening calls, scheduling appointments and follow-up visits.

Follows all established clinical procedures and workflows for patient care and communication, privacy/security, and other regulatory requirements. Partners with the enterprise services division of the college, including Health Informatics, Medical Billing, Medical Records, and others to ensure patient billing and documentation are complete and accurate.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Registered Nurse (RN) License in the State of Alabama in good standing.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have a current CPR certification and have used an electronic health record system in a previous learning or employed role.

Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.


Skills and Knowledge: Ability to perform patient care as directed by a physician, nurse practitioner, or other qualified medical professional. Understanding of medical and behavioral health terminology, symptoms and behavior patterns of psychiatry/behavioral health patients. Ability to apply appropriate crisis intervention techniques with patients.

Efficient and accurate computer and data entry skills. Excellent communication, public relations, customer service, and telephone etiquette skills. Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment. Desire to exemplify the core values and mission of the organization, always exercising utmost discretion, diplomacy and tact in patient/staff interactions. Willingness to learn and consistently deliver patient-centered customer service. Understanding of the need for strict confidentially of protected health information and the requirement to follow HIPAA regulations at all times. Punctual and reliable.


Preferred Qualifications: Two years of psychiatric and/or behavioral health nursing experience. Previous experience administering crisis intervention techniques.
