Job Summary:The Library Public Services Assistant assists patrons in the use of the library and its resources. Creates, edits, and maintains records in libraries online database system. Supports various library units depending upon department assigned, any of the following: reserves and current periodicals, circulation, interlibrary loan, acquisitions and government documents, library ordering, purchasing and budgeting. Obtains and lends materials outside the University campus. Provides routine library facilities and equipment support. May supervise student workers.
Additional Department Summary: Distributes UA Libraries materials to other institutions. Monitors ILLiad and Rapid ILL databases and ILL Lending fill rates. Oversees deliveries to resource sharing consortia such as NAAL, ASERL, KUDZU, SEC, and GWLA Libraries. Assists with the design and implementation of workflows for student assistants, training, and directing student assistants on completion of ILL work tasks. Initiates the lending process by performing searches in the online catalog. Verifies UA ownership of requested materials and ensures that materials are delivered promptly to other institutions. Negotiates extended loan terms and overdue fine imposition. Ensures ILLiad, OCLC and RapidILL modules are working accurately. Performs public service and technical processing duties that require in-depth knowledge of unit policies/procedures and basic knowledge of library, university, consortia, national policies/procedures, standards, and codes. Communicates with UA Libraries’ departments, university offices, and other libraries and/or vendors on matters of moderate complexity. Provides input on the development of unit policies and procedures. Performs all duties with minimal direct supervision and has the authority to grant exceptions to policies on a limited basis. This position has scheduled desk and chat hours and assists with all Circulation Services as needed, including the night and weekend rotation schedule.
Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of library experience; OR associate's degree or higher and some library experience.
Skills and Knowledge: Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing. Ability to interact in manner with patrons and co-workers. Must have sensitivity to deadlines. Ability to work in team environment.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in utilizing different software applications to maintain files and produce necessary documents.
