Job Summary: The Library Public Services Assistant assists patrons in the use of the library and its resources. Creates, edits, and maintains records in libraries online database system. Supports various library units depending upon department assigned, any of the following: reserves and current periodicals, circulation, interlibrary loan, acquisitions and government documents, library ordering, purchasing and budgeting. Obtains and lends materials outside the University campus. Provides routine library facilities and equipment support. May supervise student workers.
Additional Department Summary: Assists with delivery of materials to Distance Education Students. Assists with the retrieval and delivery of UA materials to UA faculty, staff and students. Assists with all operations involved in distributing UA materials to other institutions requesting them. Designs workflow documentation. Provides direction and guidance to student assistants. Initiates the Lending and RapidILL process by performing searches in the online catalog; verifying UA ownership of requested materials; insuring that materials are delivered in a timely manner to other institutions; insuring that delivery of materials to consortia partners is met within established time limits; insuring delivery of materials to Distance Education students in a timely manner; insuring delivery of materials to UA patrons in a timely manner; and negotiating extended loan terms or overdue fine impositions. Utilizes library automated system modules to input data or search for moderately difficulty records. Applies basic knowledge of a limited number of software packages such as email, print and electronic document processing or specialized applications used by the unit. Communicates with other library departments, university offices, and outside agencies.
This position has scheduled desk and chat hours and assists with all Circulation Services as needed, including the night and weekend rotation schedule.
Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of library experience; OR associate's degree or higher and some library experience.
Skills and Knowledge: Basic knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and email applications. Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing. Ability to interact in manner with patrons and co-workers. Must have sensitivity to deadlines. Ability to work in team environment. Understanding of computer systems, mobile devices and other tech products. Ability to diagnose and resolve basic technical issues.
Preferred Qualifications: Supervisory experience in a library environment. Experience in using different software applications to maintain files and produce necessary documents.
