Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm; some evenings & weekends required, on-call for emergencies for assigned programs.


Job Summary: The Director of Recreation Programs provides leadership, direction, planning, organization, professional management, supervision and evaluation for all program areas within the Department of University Recreation. Supervises and guides the successful development and execution of all University Recreation programming activities. Leads all programs staff in providing clean, safe, and welcoming recreational spaces for the University students and community. Develops specific program and participation policies. Evaluates personnel needs. Provides staff development. Plans and develops long and short-range organizational goals.


Additional Department Summary: Supports the academic mission of the University by providing recreational, intramural, sport club, outdoor, fitness, and experiential learning programs and services which foster engagement in campus life and maximize the student learning experience. Supports University Recreation’s mission to serve as a provider of activities, services, and employment opportunities that accentuate the needs and desires of the UA community. Serves as a liaison between the University's administration and University Recreation participants at the direction of the Executive Director, and works to provide a respectful, supportive, and healthy environment for University Recreation participants. Ensures the safety and well­being of participants which creates an environment for health and fitness improvement.

Hires, trains, schedules, gives feedback and evaluations, and administers disciplinary processes for 8-10 staff employees. Provides functional leadership and development for 125-150 part-time student employees. Collaborates with staff to make decisions regarding policies, liability and risk management issues, emergency action plans, schedules, activities and staffing for all program areas.

Assesses and manages significant risk. Provides program planning. Coordinates the budget. Develops and evaluates policy. Assesses, appraises, and utilizes data to support facilities, programs, and services for all University Recreation participants. Serves as a member of the department’s senior leadership team and provides input to the department’s strategic direction and decision making. Has personal accountability for financial reporting and responsibility for establishing, enforcing, and following internal processes and controls as outlined in UA policies and procedures.

Completes required training and promoting a safe, hospitable, and respectful workplace. Responsible for holding staff accountable for completion of required training.

Hours vary to include some nights and weekends for staff training and development, events and other activities. On call for emergencies for assigned programs.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and six (6) years of recreation experience; OR master's degree and four (4) years of recreation experience.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.


Skills and Knowledge: Understanding of risk management principles. Proficient in budget management, administration and organization, public speaking, special event planning and management, summer or youth camps, public relations, leadership theory, personnel management, and/or recreation administration, preferably in a dynamic campus situation. Strong communication skills. Demonstrates commitment to supporting all students.


Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in recreational administration, sports administration, or higher education administration. Progressive experience to include recreation administration, supervision of exempt and non-exempt employees, student staff leadership and development, and administration of programs and budgets. Current national certification by one or more of the following: National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA), Graduate NIRSA School of Collegiate Recreation (Level II); First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor (American Red Cross), Lifeguard and/or Lifeguard Instructor (American Red Cross), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), or American College Personnel Association (ACPA). Experience with fund raising, sponsorships, and external revenue generation.
