Job Summary: The Web Strategist II uses specialized technical and web-centered digital marketing knowledge to manage or support college-level websites. Works under moderate supervision.
Additional Department Summary: The Web Strategist II plays a key role in managing and enhancing the Alabama Water Institute’s (AWI) digital presence.
Designs, develops, tests, implements, and maintains the AWI website—along with microsites, landing pages, and sites for affiliated research entities (CIROH, GWSC, CONSERVE)—ensuring responsive design, strong user experience, ADA accessibility, and compliance with Strategic Communications brand standards.
Oversees email marketing workflows, template development for social media and email, and coordination with other communications staff to ensure cohesive digital messaging. Leads efforts to enhance AWI’s digital asset organization and support SEO-driven content strategy, including optimizing article and page copy for search engines and AI-powered discovery.
Visually and strategically communicates AWI’s mission of multidisciplinary, interconnected water research in a clear, accessible, and engaging online format.
The position is a soft-funded position. Continuance is based upon availability of funding.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of web content management experience; OR master's degree and some web content management experience.
Skills and Knowledge: Strong understanding of responsive design, user experience (UX), and accessibility standards. Proficient in WordPress and skilled in HTML, CSS, and related languages, with additional experience using Angular, GitHub, and cross-browser testing tools. Familiarity with SEO best practices, metadata tagging, and optimizing content for both search engines and AI tools is essential. Strong writing and editing skills for digital content, as well as experience with email marketing tools, template creation, and maintaining a digital asset library. Demonstrate excellent organizational and time management skills to successfully manage multiple projects.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience as a web designer, including the creation and design of websites and the use of data scripting and development tools such as HTML, CSS, and other client-side languages where appropriate. Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite products, CRMs, SEO, Google Analytics, and both PC and Mac systems is preferred. Experience working in WordPress and familiarity with version control tools such as GitHub, or a willingness to learn. Knowledge of Angular or similar modern web development frameworks is also desirable to support our research entities’ websites.
