Department/Organization: 218142 - AL Disability Advocacy Prog (ADAP)


Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm

Job Summary: The Legal Assistant assists attorneys and advocates in specialized workgroups with day-to-day operations of the ADAP program. Oversees general office, administrative, and technical support with some variety and complexity.


Additional Department Summary: ADAP is the statewide protection and advocacy system for the state of Alabama. ADAP works to achieve fairness and justice for Alabamians with disabilities. ADAP provides legally-based advocacy services. Investigates allegations of abuse and neglect against persons with disabilities. Participates in legislative and regulatory advocacy work. Conduct education and outreach about disability rights.


Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.


Skills and Knowledge: Basic knowledge in the usage of personal computers and standard application software (such as, word processing, spreadsheet, and database management). Knowledge in internet research. Ability to perform multiple task and to analyze and prioritize issues. Ability to maintain confidentiality and work independently. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of standard office equipment a must. Ability to understand social service delivery systems which will impact individuals with disabilities. Exceptional writing and editing skills. Ability to establish and sustain good working relationships with outside agencies and contacts. Ability to decipher legal and medical documents. Good organizational skills. Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with a large group of individuals.


Preferred Qualifications: Notary Public Certification. Experience with Concur and related UA purchasing/procurement practices.
