Job Summary: The Police Officer Trainee I completes UAPD in-house orientation, APOST Academy, and Field Training and Evaluation Program required to become a Police Officer.
Additional Department Summary: Drives University vehicles as needed. Observes and adheres closely to all safety rules and regulations as listed on product and equipment labels and as directed by management. Works extended hours and overtime, including evenings, weekends, and holiday as assigned. Works various overtime events, both voluntary and mandatory, based on the needs of the department and the University community.
Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED. Must pass physical ability, physical agility, and police officer recruit examination. Must be a U.S. citizen. For those that have been in the Armed Forces, an honorable discharge from military service. Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Post-Offer Requirements: Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen, physical, and psychological exam. Post-Hire Requirements: Successful completion of the recruit orientation training. Successful completion of the APOST Commission’s academy for basic training within six months of being sworn in as a UAPD Officer; or a certificate verifying the successful completion of the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission’s academy. Successful completion of the University of Alabama Police Department’s field training and evaluation program. After completion of these phases, the position has a 1040-hour probationary period of solo field assignment duty.
Skills and Knowledge: Ability to to perform foot patrol and work outside in all weather conditions. Ability to learn and utilize computer software designed for law enforcement. High level of attention to detail. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to use good judgement and make effective decisions. Ability to demonstrate courage and take responsibility. Ability to maintain professionalism when dealing with conflict.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher. Foreign language skills. Experience working in a community-oriented policing environment with an emphasis on service in a higher education environment/community.
