Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm; some weekends and after-hours work to support campus events


Job Summary: The Director of Building Maintenance oversees the professional management of all functions related to the delivery of high quality building maintenance and renovation activities at The University of Alabama.


Additional Department Summary: Provides leadership to ensure operational effectiveness and productivity of the Building Maintenance department and Facilities Renovation crew. Implements projects related to the repair, maintenance, and installation of building and campus equipment. Directs the Facilities Renovation crew and ensures that the University manages its facilities as efficiently and effectively as possible. Develops and implements deferred maintenance projects for the Facilities and Ground Department. Oversees activities for the Building Maintenance department and Facilities Renovation crew related to budget preparation and administration, personnel staffing, and the procurement of supplies and equipment. Reviews and approves building and equipment specifications. Must drive from site to site.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and eight (8) years of building maintenance experience to include some supervisory experience; OR Master's degree and six (6) years of building maintenance experience to include some supervisory experience.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.

Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.


Skills and Knowledge: Must be able to lift, handle, and maneuver the tools, materials, and supplies of the job. Outstanding collaboration and communication skills. Ability to develop a culture of process improvement, performance excellence, customer service, transparency, and accountability. Comprehensive understanding of facilities, maintenance, facilities operations, grounds operations, custodial operations, and facilities infrastructure. Decision-making, planning, organizational, and problem-resolution skills. Strong relationship-building and communication skills with internal and external constituents. Ability to function within a complex regulatory environment. Ability to participate in and actively manage change in the business environment. Ability to deliver clear, focused explanations of complex issues for varied audiences. Must be willing to work long and/or unusual hours to include nights and weekends depending on the schedule of campus events. Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions.
