Job Summary: The Data Scientist I assists in data management and integration efforts across the university, state, and federal agencies. Develops processes to extract, transform, and load data into common data repositories. Coordinates creating new databases, performing database backups and restores, user maintenance, and ensuring database performance.
Additional Department Summary: The Culverhouse College of Business at The University of Alabama is seeking a Research Data Scientist to join the Institute of Data and Analytics (IDA). The Data Scientist will lead and support data analysis efforts across multiple IDA projects, with emphasis on statistical modeling, machine learning, and effective communication of results. This individual will collaborate on high-impact initiatives such as Alabama Medicaid and the Drug Data Research Center (DDRC), as well as interdisciplinary efforts in grant writing, manuscript development, and cross-campus collaborations. The role also includes mentoring students in analytical methods and software applications. The position is soft-funded and dependent on external funding sources.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree and and some data science or analytics experience.
Skills and Knowledge: Proficiency in statistical methods such as regression, longitudinal data analysis, and machine learning. Experience working with large data sets and data management tools. Must be professional in presentation, communication, and work.
Preferred Qualifications: Doctoral degree, preferably in statistics/biostatistics, math, public health, operations management or another quantitative program or related field. The combination of experience in data analysis and any graduate degree will be considered. Proficiency in SQL/Python and statistical programming languages such as R or SAS preferred. Familiarity with data visualization and dashboarding tools is a plus. Demonstrated ability to contribute to academic research through peer-reviewed publications. Experience mentoring students or junior analysts in research settings. Experience contributing to grant proposals and research manuscripts is strongly preferred.
