Job Summary: The Postdoctoral Fellow provides for an internship and continuation of scholarly activity and research after achieving the PhD or other doctoral degree under the direction of a senior faculty member who serves as a mentor for the postdoctoral appointee.
Additional Department Summary: The Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering Department at The University of Alabama is seeking a candidate for a Postdoctoral fellow position. This position is available to individuals with research interests and expertise in statistical physics, stochastic processes, hydrometeorology, turbulence and precipitation, and related multiscale geophysical phenomenon. Successful candidates will hold a terminal degree in Civil Engineering or a related field (e.g. statistical physics, applied mathematics) and demonstrate a record of academic achievement in research, including peer reviewed manuscripts in topics related to stochastic modeling of multiscale geophysical systems especially those in precipitation theory, multiplicative cascades, and scale-dependent variability. Initial appointments are for one year with renewal contingent upon demonstration of research productivity and funding.
Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. or other terminal degree in Civil Engineering or related field such as physics (statistical, nonlinear, or fluid dynamics) and applied mathematics.
Skills and Knowledge: Turbulence theory and cascade processes, multifractal/intermittency analysis, nonlinear time series analysis, nonlinear dynamics, and extended thermodynamics and irreversibility studies.
Preferred Qualifications: Skills in bridging physical processes to statistical representations, theoretical understanding of turbulence and rainfall systems, knowledge in probability theory, information-theoretic approaches. Good knowledge of scientific programming languages, preferably open-source tools such as Python; and familiarity with high-performance computing is desirable.
