Job Summary: The Police Field Training Officer facilitates field learning to ensure that officer recruits acquire the knowledge and skills to become a successful UAPD Police Officer. Serves in an ongoing role as a mentor, role model, and educational resource for recruits and fellow employees. Provides support to the unit leader. Performs standard Police Officer duties while not conducting field trainings.


Additional Department Summary: Drives a University vehicle. Must meet and adhere to the established guidelines for the use of a UAPD assigned take-home vehicle.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Must be a current Police Officer I or Police Officer II in good standing at The University of Alabama. Must have received a "meets expectations" or higher on most recent performance evaluation. Three (3) years of experience as a sworn police officer. Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen. Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies.


Skills and Knowledge: Skills and knowledge related to being a Police Officer. Strong working knowledge of agency policies, procedures, and directives with the ability to consistently model exemplary law enforcement duties. Ability to motivate, teach, and facilitate learning. Ability to vary teaching/training methods to an individual recruit. Ability to provide critical, constructive feedback and clear direction. Demonstrated past initiative to maintain/improve police officer skills, knowledge, and abilities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong attention to detail. Ability to use good judgement, make effective decisions, and demonstrate courage and accountability. Ability to maintain professionalism when dealing with conflict. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.


Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or higher. Foreign language skills. Previous teaching or training experience.
