Job Summary: The Outdoor Recreation Coordinator provides professional management and supervision for the daily operations of University Recreation Outdoor Programs.


Additional Department Summary: The Outdoor Recreation Coordinator provides professional management and supervision for the daily operations of University Recreation Outdoor Programs, which supports outdoor equipment rental, 40-foot climbing wall, bike repair shop, experiential education program, outdoor trip program, and special events. Programming and activities occur at two on-campus locations - Outdoor Rental Center at the Student Recreation Center and Climbing Wall at the Witt Student Activity Center. These programs focus on health, holistic wellness, safety education, and leadership development.

Reports to and works closely with the Assistant Director for Outdoor Recreation on strategic planning to ensure that programmatic, financial, and experiential goals are met. Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, and supervises 25-35 student staff employees. Performs employee skills assessments and performance evaluations. Creates programmatic calendar. Schedules facility and manages staff. Develops and executes revenue producing programs. Assists with departmental safety trainings. Performs high level of risk assessment. Manages administrative tasks (payroll, budgeting, and accounting) and has personal accountability for financial reporting and responsibility for establishing, enforcing, and following internal processes and controls as outlined in UA policies and procedures.

Assists in providing opportunities that have a positive impact on the physical, social, and emotional wellbeing of University students through collaboration and partnerships with other divisional and campus units.

On-call for emergencies in program area. Some evenings, weekends, & holidays may be required.

Responsible for completing required training and promoting a safe, hospitable, and respectful workplace. Responsible for holding staff accountable for completion of required training.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher and some outdoor recreation programming experience.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.


Skills and Knowledge: Effective customer relations, strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to prioritize multiple work responsibilities in time-sensitive situations, work with limited supervision, supervise and delegate work to student staff, and exercise good judgment. Ability to manage staff at multiple indoor and outdoor venues for a wide array of activities. Ability to teach and train multiple outdoor disciplines such as backpacking, rock climbing, cycling, caving, challenge programming, canoeing, and/or kayaking. Knowledge of outdoor adventure ethics and best practices. Knowledge of personal computers and standard software applications (i.e. word processing, spreadsheets, database management, etc.).

Demonstrated commitment to expand multicultural knowledge, awareness, and skills as evidenced through: demonstrating self-awareness; understanding and valuing others.


Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in Recreation Management, Sport Management, Higher Education, or similar field of study and two (2) years of progressive experience leading comprehensive outdoor recreation programs at the university/college level. Knowledge of outdoor site management principles and practices; bicycle shop experience and passenger van driving experience are preferred. Current American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR/AED and First Aid Instructor. Relevant professional certifications such as American Canoe Association level III or IV Canoe or Kayaking Instructor, AMGA or PCIA Single Pitch or Climbing Wall Instructor, and Swift Water Rescue. Four (4) or more seasons of wilderness leadership experience preferred (season is 4-7 months of continual exposure). Knowledge of educational theories for student development.
