Job Summary: The Research Project Coordinator supports the overall development of research project(s). Assists with project design, management, and implementation. Promotes the project and serves as liaison between the project and contacts internal and external to the University. May supervise students, provide general office assistance, create promotional materials, and assist in the development of other potential projects.
Additional Department Summary: Mental Health Awareness and Literacy Training for First Responders is implementing mental health awareness and literacy training across all 67 Alabama counties to help individuals recognize the signs of mental illness, safely de-escalate crises, and connect those in need to services. Training will be provided to first responders, public safety, and criminal justice personnel engaging with adults and youth experiencing or at risk of a mental health crisis. The project will 1) train the targeted audience to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental disorders, particularly serious mental illness (SMI) and/or serious emotional disturbances, 2) establish linkages with community-based mental health agencies to refer individuals with the signs or symptoms of mental illness to appropriate services, 3) train the target audience to identify persons with a mental disorder and employ crisis de-escalation techniques, and 4) educate about resources that are available in the community for individuals with a mental disorder. The evidenced-based Mental Health First Aid program will be utilized with first responder participants to provide the tools they need to identify and address behavioral health in the field. The Project Coordinator will be required to become a certified Mental Health First Aid Trainer.
The Project Coordinator will help coordinate all project-related activities. Assist the Project Manager and Project Director in communicating with local and statewide boards. Develop and deliver mental health awareness training and health promotion programming with first responders, public safety, and criminal justice personnel. Keep records, write annual reports for funders, communicate with the Project Support Team, and ensure appropriate data collection. Help to oversee security of all records maintained on the UA campus related to the project and participants and will develop the VitAL Mental Health Awareness Training website content and keep it up to date as instructed by the Project Manager and Project Director. Organizes meetings and recording of minutes, monitor utilization of resources, and monitor timeframes for project completion and submission of required reports. Handles day-to-day office operations, including administrative tasks and other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher and some experience coordinating projects.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.
Skills and Knowledge: Strong organizational skills as evidenced by work history. Able to work independently using sound judgment and solid decision-making skills to solve problems and to work through barriers that may impact progress. Experience with basic office software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Exceptional public speaking skills and formal training experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and three (2) years of experience; OR Master's degree and some experience experience in a health-related field, including applied behavioral sciences, psychology, social work, health education, or public health.
Mental Health First Aid Training Certification.
