How can you make a difference? 

Under the overall direction of the Chief of Education, the Education Specialist will provide technical expertise and management support to girls’ education outputs. S/he will support UNICEF Afghanistan Country Office, the Education Cluster, Education Strategic Thematic Working Group (basic human needs), and civil society to design and implement alternative learning pathways for girls in light of the complex and dynamic operating environment in Afghanistan.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Minimum requirements:

Education: 

  • An advanced university degree in one of the following fields is required: education, public administration, international relations, social sciences, or any other relevant studies.

Work Experience: 

  • A minimum of eight years of professional experience in education program planning, management, and research. Experience of working in emergency and crisis contexts with a focus on girls’ education and demonstrate expertise in gender-responsive education program particularly related to girls’ education.
  • Relevant experience of working in an emergency context is important

Desirable Assets:

  • Proven experience advancing girls' education in humanitarian and development contexts, with strong awareness of donor priorities, particularly those of the World Bank and Asian Development Bank.
  • In-depth understanding of safeguarding and child protection in education, applying a gender-sensitive approach.
  • Skilled in donor funding mechanisms (traditional and non-traditional), with hands-on experience in project design, implementation, and management; prior engagement with international financial institutions (IFIs) is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated success in advocacy for girls' education in politically sensitive or complex environments, and in delivering targeted programmes for out-of-school girls, with a clear grasp of their unique vulnerabilities.
  • Solid foundation in education programming, with expertise in monitoring & evaluation and research methodologies.
  • Technical know-how in alternative education models, digital/hybrid learning solutions, and skills development, especially in collaboration with the private sector.
  • Strong capacity to collaborate across sectors, engaging UN agencies, development partners, and civil society organizations effectively.
  • Good understanding of inclusive education programming, promoting equitable learning outcomes for both girls and boys.
  • Experience working in a developing country is considered as an asset.
  • Relevant experience in a UN system agency or organization is considered as an asset.

Language Requirements: 

  • Fluency in English is required, and local languages (Dari & Pashto) is an asset.

UNICEF appointments are subject to medical clearance.  Issuance of a visa by the host country of the duty station is required for IP positions and will be facilitated by UNICEF. Appointments may also be subject to inoculation (vaccination) requirements, including against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid). Should you be selected for a position with UNICEF, you either must be inoculated as required or receive a medical exemption from the relevant department of the UN. Otherwise, the selection will be canceled.
